Election Day

It's election day in Cuba.  Many will argue about what that means and the extent to which it changes even the slightest detail of Cuban life, but I will spend the day thinking about the beautiful people on an island I love: the social gatherings at local polling places, the quiet debates between friends, and the hope that someday Cuba's elections really will give the nation's citizens a say in the direction of their country.

(Much more detail to come when I get time to complete my research project on Cuba's election process.)

  1. Beth, check out my Cuba on 2 Wheels web site: www.cubaon2wheels.org for my personal observations of the 1997-98 and 2002-03 elections. I even have Fidel's biography posted in an unofficial English translation. The Cuban system is very clean and honest. Totally lacking in our system's deception where voter common sense is confronted by the science of mind manipulation.

    1. Dave,

I'm so glad you found my blog so you could help me find the story of your trip! What an amazing idea - I'm settling in to read every word. Have you been back since 2003? As you can tell if you spend any time on my own page, I'm obsessed with Cuba and can't wait to get back as soon as possible.

    2. Yes, I am as obsessed with Cuba as you are, Beth. I have had so many wonderful and historic experiences in Cuba, including attending the internment of Che Guevara's remains in Santa Clara, October 18th (I think)1997. Arguably the most important experience of all but strangely I never wrote about it. I do have my notes though.

My obsession has lead me to help form a Canada-Cuba solidarity organization, Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association (CCFA) Niagara and to join the board of directors for Canada's national solidarity umbrella group, Canadian Network on Cuba (CNC).

The last 2 years I organized the CNC's volunteer work brigade to Cuba, the Che Guevara Brigade. Check this out at www.canadiannetworkoncuba.ca/brigade

Perhaps you may wish to join the brigade for 2013. We will be in Havana, Isla Jouventud and Matanzas. I just received a draft program which has not been posted on the web site (needs adjusting) but will give you an idea what we do. Reply to the Brigade email and I will forward it to you.
